Sunken floor is  the process where in the RCC –Reinforced Cement Concrete  slab is lowered  by about 200 to 300 mm over a certain portion in order to provide access to plumbing tubes  for rest rooms and balconies to retain floor level .Once the plumbing  tubes are connected the balance space is filled with light weight packing materials referred as ECA – Expanded Cement Aggregate  . Adequate packing over the filled material is done to avoid leakage leading to dampness .

Filling materials  and its Nature

Filling materials are materials used to fill in the cavities of the sunken region. These materials are generally light in weight with low compression factor used to fill the voids and cavities in the sunken region. Once filled the top layer is dressed with waterproof compounds to prevent and arrest the flow of water in case of any leakage in the drain lines.

Types of Sunken floor filling materials

Sunken floor  filling materials used are CLC Broken Blocks / CLC Rubble, Aircon blocks, AAC Blocks. Brick bats,  Weight Cinder, Broken Red Clay Bricks ,Broken Fly Ash Bricks, Coal lumps, Burnt Tar lumps and Brick Jelly .

ECA –Expanded Clay Aggregate as a filler

Apart from the standard materials like sand , brick bats , Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA ) is a preferred green material for filling empty spaces in sunken region of  building. Light weight back fill applications are used widely as filler for the sunken region .This helps to reduce undesired  load on the structure  but provide rigidity  .

Nature of Fillers used in Sunken floor filling

ECA –Expanded Clay Aggregate is neutral and hence the PH level is neutral. These materials are inert and do not react with any chemicals. These materials are sound dampening agents and do not allow sound propagation.

Sunken floor filling materials are hard in nature .They  possess low weight  and don’t expand or compress .These materials are resistant to earth quake and are inflammable .They don’t emit toxic fumes that affect the environment .These are Echo friendly.

Sunken floor filling materials  don’t absorb water .They are termite resistant and not attacked by fungus or bacteria. They are insulating material  and act as dielectric  and don’t  conduct electricity .These don’t contain that rust or corrode over time .They possess high compressive strength .

1)What is Sunken Floor ?

The sunken floor is the process wherein the RCC –Reinforced Cement Concrete slab is lowered by about 200 to 300 mm over a certain portion to provide access to plumbing tubes
for restrooms and balconies to retain floor level.

2)What is ECA?

The term ECA refers to Expanded Clay Aggregate. These materials are used to fill the empty region/voids in the sunken region. These materials are inert and do not react with any chemicals. These materials are sound dampening agents and do not allow sound propagation.

3)What are the materials used for sunken floor filling ?

Sunken floor-filling materials used are CLC Broken Blocks / CLC Rubble, Aircon blocks, AAC Blocks. Brickbats, Weight Cinder, Broken Red Clay Bricks, Broken Fly Ash Bricks, Coal lumps, Burnt Tar lumps, and Brick Jelly.

4)What is the nature of Sunken floor fillers ?

Sunken floor-filling materials are hard. The colour vary based on composition. They possess low weight and don’t expand or compress. These materials are resistant to earthquakes and are inflammable. They don’t emit toxic fumes that affect the environment. These are the Echo friendly.

5)What are the unique qualities of sunken floor fillers ?

Sunken floor-filling materials don’t absorb water. They are termite resistant and not attacked by fungus or bacteria. They are insulating material and act as dielectric and don’t conduct electricity. These don’t contain that rust or corrode over time. They possess high compressive strength but posses low weight.

6)Does ECA possess any certification on quality ?

Yes. Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA) is the only lightweight aggregate certified for geotechnical uses. It is marked compliant with EN 15732 ( Lightweight fill and thermal insulation products for civil engineering applications (CEA) by CE. Technical aspects vary based on the application purpose.
